The story

Varasgaon Dam, also known as Veer Baaji Pasalkar Dam, holds back the Mosi river roughly 40 km from Pune. It is one of three major dams that supply the city with water. Panshet Dam lies close by, and the pair have become a popular place for picnics.

During and just after the monsoon the surrounding hills turn green and are threaded with waterfalls, and water sports are held on the reservoir. The Lavasa hill-town project lies about half an hour away; the Bombay High Court halted its construction in December 2010, partly over fears that it could pollute Pune's supply, and around 18 tribal villages were displaced for it.
