The story

Khadakwasla Dam crosses the Mutha River about 21 km from central Pune, holding back Khadakwasla Lake, the main water supply for the city and its suburbs. The dam is 1.9 km long, and its reservoir is fed by the Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar dams upstream. On 12 July 1961 the dam gave way under a surge of water three times greater than it was built to hold, causing the worst disaster in Pune's history.

Today the road to Sinhagad, which runs along the lake, is a popular picnic spot, and a strip of stalls known as the chowpatty sells snacks, fast food and soft drinks. Sinhagad Fort rises a few kilometres to the south, and the National Defence Academy and other defence institutions lie close to the lake.
