01 — The story

The story

Shaniwar Wada was the palace-fort of the Peshwas in Pune. Peshwa Baji Rao I began it in 1732 and it was finished about two years later, at a recorded cost of 16,110 rupees. Once seven storeys high, it was destroyed by fire in 1828, and only its foundations remain today.

The complex has five gateways, among them the Dilli Darwaja used by ordinary visitors and the Narayan or Jambhul Darwaja, kept for the women of the household. Visitors can still see carved teak doorways, pillars and the Hazari Karanje, a fountain with a thousand jets. The murder of the young Peshwa Narayanrao inside its walls gave rise to stories that the wada is haunted.
