01 — The story

The story

Vishrambaug Wada is a three-storey mansion at the junction of Bajirao Road and Laxmi Road in old Pune. It was built around 1810–11 by Baji Rao II, the last Peshwa, who chose to live here rather than in Shaniwar Wada, the main seat of his family. Wada means a mansion or fortified house in Marathi.

The entrance is lined with carved teak pillars. Upstairs, a large hall has ornamented ceilings and chandeliers, and a wooden balcony where the Peshwa's musicians once played looks over it. The building now holds offices and a post office, hosts cultural events and has a museum of objects from the Peshwa era.
