The story

Torna Fort, also called Prachandagad, the massive fort, crowns a 1,403-metre hill above the village of Velhe in the Sahyadris, about 50 kilometres south-west of Pune. It is the highest hill fort in the district. It is believed to have been built in the 13th century, and the Menghai Devi, or Tornaji, temple stands near its entrance.

In 1646 the 16-year-old Shivaji captured Torna, the first fort of what became the Maratha state. While repairing it his men uncovered a large hoard of buried gold, which he used to build Rajgad and other forts. After the killing of Shivaji's son Sambhaji the Mughals briefly held it, and Aurangzeb renamed it Futulgaib in recognition of how hard it had been to take. Visitors usually travel via Nasrapur to Velhe and climb from there.
