01 — The story

The story

Konkandiva Fort stands on the border of Raigad and Pune districts, around 70 km from Pune. Its job was surveillance: keeping watch for any attack on Raigad fort coming from the Ghol side along the Mutha river.

Two routes lead up. The harder one starts on the Konkan side at Sandoshi, 32 km from Mahad, and crosses the Kavlya ghat hillock north of the village. The easier, broad route begins at Gajarewadi near Ghol in Pune district. The two meet at a col north of the fort, after which the path turns steep and becomes demanding in the rains. On top there is a cave along with a few rock-cut cisterns, and villagers in Gajarewadi can arrange food and an overnight stay.
