01 — The story

The story

Shivthar Ghal, also called Sundarmath (beautiful monastery), is a cave in Varandha Ghat in the Sahyadri, on the Bhor–Mahad road near Barasgaon, around 34 km from Mahad in Maharashtra. During the monsoon a waterfall pours down in front of its mouth.

The cave is linked with the saint Samarth Ramdas, who lived here for about 22 years and dictated the Dasbodh to Kalyan Swami. Tradition also holds that the Maratha king Shivaji first met Samarth Ramdas at this spot.
