Mangad Fort stands at Borwadi, near Mashidwadi in Mangaon taluka, Raigad district, at 235 metres above sea level, and is linked with the footsteps of Chhatrapati Shivaji. Under the Treaty of Purandar it was surrendered to Aurangzeb, and in 1818, at the end of Peshwa rule, it was taken by a British officer, Colonel Prother. Jore valley lies to the south, Konkan Diva fort to the east and Gangawali, birthplace of Chhatrapati Shahu, to the south-west.
At the base is an old temple of the goddess Vinzai, entered through a cow-mouth doorway with a carved fish and lotus. On the fort are four water tanks with drinkable water, a cave for about 50 people once used to store grain, the remains of the killedar's house and a southern ground once used for drill. Borwadi is reached by bus to Mangaon and rickshaw via Nizampur, then about an hour's walk; on a clear day Sudhagad and Tala forts and the Arabian Sea can be seen from the top.
