01 — The story

The story

Ghangad lies about 30 km from Lonavala and 100 km from Pune, above the base village of Ekole. Little is known of its history: it is at least 300 years old, was used to hold prisoners and to watch the Pune–Konkan trade route, and was given up to the British after Korigad fell on 17 March 1818. The Shivaji Trail group and local villagers restored it in 2011–12.

The path starts on a hillock south of Ekole and climbs through dense forest to the main gate, which has lost its arch, in about half an hour. Villagers have fixed an iron ladder up to the upper fort, and a cistern cut in the rock along the way to the second gate holds drinking water all year. The top has a few ruined buildings and views of Tailbaila, Korigad, Mulshi dam and Sudhagad. The fort can be visited in any season, and Ekole villagers arrange meals and overnight stays.
