The story

Mulshi Dam holds back the Mula River in Mulshi taluka of Pune district. Its water irrigates farmland and feeds the Bhira hydroelectric station run by Tata Power, which uses six 25 MW turbines installed in 1927 alongside a 150 MW pumped-storage unit.

Building the dam set off the Mulshi Satyagraha of 1921 to 1924, led by Vinayak Bhuskute and Pandurang Mahadev Bapat, who earned the title Senapati, on behalf of farmers whose land was taken. About 15,073 acres were acquired, and a century later many of the farmers' demands are still unmet. In recent years Mulshi and its surroundings have been developed for tourism, with accommodation for visitors. It is around two hours' drive from Pune and draws crowds at weekends, and August to October is considered the best time to go.
