Talagad stands about 18 km south of Roha on the Roha–Tala–Indapur road in Raigad district, at around 1,000 feet. It is a narrow fortified strip only about 20 m wide along a spur, built to watch the trade route from Maval to the coastal ports and to keep an eye on the Siddis of Janjira. Its builder is unknown. The Adilshahis of Bijapur held it in the 16th century, Shivaji took it in 1648, and it later passed to the Siddis, then to Bajirao I in 1735 and to the British in 1818. The clothes Shivaji wore at his coronation are said to have come from here.
The long double wall around the narrow machi is in good condition. On the upper hill are several rock-cut water cisterns, and an image of Veer Maruti stands near the main gate. Ghosalgad is clearly visible from the top, and the Kuda caves are nearby. The views draw trekkers in both summer and the rains.
