The story

Zapurza Museum of Art & Culture stands in Kudje village, 25 km from Pune, looking over Khadakwasla Lake with Sinhagad Fort behind. The musician Hariprasad Chaurasia inaugurated it, and it has been open to visitors since May 2022. The collection belongs to Ajit Gadgil, a sixth-generation Pune jeweller who, over 25 years, kept heirlooms that customers brought to pawn rather than melting them down, along with paithani sarees woven with real gold zari.

The holding has grown to about 1,500 objects, taking in sculpture, paintings, lamps, prints, textiles and silverware, and since only 30–35% fits on display at once, items are rotated. Designed by Shirish Beri with Dilip Joshi, the 7.5–8-acre campus uses earthy tones, stonemasonry and pitched roofs of terracotta tiles. It has ten galleries, a 195-seat auditorium, an amphitheatre by the lake, studios and a café.
