The story

Pashan Lake is a man-made lake near Pashan, about 12 km from central Pune, built in British times to supply water to Pashan, Sutarwadi and the nearby governor's residence. It is fed by the Ramnadi, which rises at Bavdhan and is controlled by a barrage north of the lake, and its catchment covers 40 square kilometres.

Migratory birds come to the lake, making it popular with birdwatchers, and it is used for morning walks and picnics. The Pune Municipal Corporation has built a 300 m Nature Trail along the western shore, as well as a bamboo plantation and a protective wall. Urban growth has taken its toll: silt from deforested hills has made the lake shallower, ipomoea weed chokes other plants, and pollution has left the water unfit to drink.
