Vanchikulam is a freshwater lake in Thrissur city, Kerala. In earlier times it was connected to the canals and backwaters of Thrissur and Ernakulam districts and formed part of a water route linking Thrissur with Kochi.
It was then a major trading hub, from which goods and people were carried by water to Kochi, Alappuzha and other parts of the state and to nearby ports, and warehouses once stood beside it. When the Shoranur–Cochin Harbour railway line arrived, the backwater trade declined and Vanchikulam lost its former importance.
