The story

Udanti Wildlife Sanctuary forms part of the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve in Gariaband district, in the region once administered from Raipur. It was notified as a sanctuary in 1984 and, though modest in area, covers several kinds of forest typical of central India.

Tall sal dominates much of the woodland, mixed with tinsa and ghont, while the ravine banks and slopes carry thick cover with clumps of bamboo. The valleys and flatter ground hold good mixed forest in which saja is common, and parts of the wider reserve lie on Chandrapur sandstone. The animal best associated with Udanti is the endangered Asiatic wild buffalo. Tigers are present, along with leopard, sloth bear, Indian wolf and mouse deer, and the forests support a varied population of birds.
