The story

Nandanvan Zoo and Safari, also called Nandanvan Garden, is a wildlife park of about 800 acres at Nava Raipur. Some 230 acres are given over to four separate safaris, 125 acres to the zoo and five acres to a rescue and rehabilitation centre. The 130-acre Khandwa Reservoir within the grounds attracts many migratory birds.

The park grew out of a shelter for injured and distressed animals opened in Raipur in 1979. After Chhattisgarh became a state in 2000, a modern safari was planned as part of the new capital. The shelter was recognised as a mini zoo in 2008, and once 800 acres were allotted in 2015 the old zoo was merged into the new park. Guided safari tours on its trails let visitors see animals in open enclosures and learn about the local ecosystem.
