The Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum in Raipur dates from 1875, which places it among the first ten museums set up in India. It first occupied an octagonal building to the east of the present ministry complex. Its current home, opposite the Collectorate on JE Road, was made possible by gifts from Rani Jyoti Devi of Rajnandgaon, and was opened by Dr Rajendra Prasad while he was President of India.
The British-style building stands in grounds of about two hectares and is designed to stay airy and cool. Its ground, first and second floors are split into themed galleries, each object labelled with notes on its background. All the pieces on show are originals, among them coins and sculptures gathered from many parts of Chhattisgarh, and a carved image of Ganesha greets visitors at the entrance.
