The story

The statue of Gautama Buddha on Pragyagiri, a hill about 1,000 feet high at Dongargarh in Rajnandgaon district, is a place of prayer and quiet reflection with wide views from the top. The figure faces east and is carved with a calm expression meant to convey wisdom and compassion.

A climb of 225 steps leads to the summit, opening up views of the country below on the way. At the top are a vihara for meditation and gardens to sit in. The site welcomes visitors of any faith; early morning and evening are the favoured times to go, and Buddha Purnima brings large gatherings. The Bamleshwari temple at Dongargarh and Kharkhara Dam are nearby.
