01 — The story

The story

Udai Sagar Lake lies about 13 km east of central Udaipur. Maharana Udai Singh built it in 1559 by damming the Berach River to secure water for his kingdom. It is tied to later events too: in 1573 Maharana Pratap refused here to submit to Akbar, the stand that led to the Battle of Haldighati, and Maharana Raj Singh later defeated an army of Aurangzeb at the lake.

It is now a quiet place for weekend picnics and boat rides. Temples near the shore are thought to date from the reign of Udai Singh II, and the lake attracts many birds, which makes it a good spot for bird photography, especially in the evening light.
