01 — The story

The story

Badi Lake, also called Jiyan Sagar, is an artificial freshwater lake on the outskirts of Udaipur. Maharana Raj Singh built it between 1652 and 1680 and named it after his mother, Jana Devi. It was meant to protect the city and its fields against drought, and it proved its value in the drought of 1973, when it became a key source of water for Udaipur.

Green hills frame the calm water, and the lakeside is usually uncrowded. Shamiyana tents along the banks are used by families and groups for picnics, and some visitors swim in the lake.
