The story

Shilpgram is a rural arts and crafts complex spread over 70 acres in the Aravalli hills at Udaipur. It presents the folk traditions of western India through groups of huts built in the vernacular styles of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa, where established craftspeople work alongside younger designers and artists.

Five huts represent the Marwar region with its weavers, and seven show Gujarat's textiles, embroidery, bead and mirror work, woodwork and Rogan painting. The Goa huts include a fisherman's house, a potter's workshop and cane and grass weaving, and Maharashtra contributes wall paintings, lost-wax casting, leather slippers and carved doors. Museums display everyday rural and tribal objects in terracotta, textile, wood and metal, a haat-style bazaar sells handmade goods, and an open-air amphitheatre hosts folk dance and theatre festivals.
