01 — The story

The story

Saheliyon Ki Bari, the Garden of the Maidens, lies in the north of Udaipur just below the embankment of Fateh Sagar Lake. Maharana Sangram Singh laid it out in the 18th century as a private retreat for the queen and her companions, away from the formality of court.

The garden has lawns, shaded groves, lotus pools and marble pavilions and kiosks along its walks. Its fountains are decorated with carved figures and inlaid stone. They need no pump: water reaches them by gravity from Fateh Sagar, a sign of the hydraulic skill of the period.
