Thoniyakavu Temple is an old Bhadrakali temple in the village of Puthenpeedika, a classic example of Kerala temple architecture. Besides the goddess there are sub-shrines for Vigneswara (Ganapathi), Veerabadran and Kandakarnan, and one for the Rakshasas. The goddess is believed to be the sister of the deity at Thiruvanikavu, near Peringottukara. The temple first stood near Thiruvanikavu, but after a devaprasnam the goddess is said to have shown the present site; 'thoniya' loosely means intuition and 'kavu' a sacred grove. The Cochin Devaswom Board now runs it.
The temple takes part in the Arattupuzha Pooram, and during that festival the goddess is believed to travel to Arattupuzha to watch it. Its own Aswathi Bharani Karthika vela falls in Kumbham, with a pooram of five elephants on Bharani day, a lamp procession called villakezhunallath, and three sub-poorams arriving with their instruments.
