The story

Kanadikavu Shree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy Temple is described as the oldest Vishnumaya temple, located at Peringottukara, about 20 km south-west of Thrissur. Its main deity is Vishnumaya Kuttichathan, worshipped with 390 Kuttichathans, Bhadrakali, Bhuvaneswari, serpent deities and a Brahmarakshas pair. Legend says the sage Koonamuthappan, after long penance in the Himalayas, brought the deity back and installed him where the Kanadi family now lives.

The temple is known for Roopakkalam, in which figures of Vishnumaya, sometimes with his companion Karimkutty, are drawn on the floor in coloured herbal powders. A priest invokes the god into the drawing, dances around it to music and then sweeps it away with coconut fronds, and the powder is handed to devotees. The Thiravellattu Mahotsavam takes place in Makaram, and the Thottampattu festival honours Bhuvaneswari, the family deity of the Kanadi family.
