The story

Thriprayar Shree Ramaswami Temple is in Triprayar, Thrissur district, on the bank of the Thirupurayar, 'the sacred river', a name that wore down over time to Triprayar; the waterway later became part of the Canoli Canal between Kozhikode and Kodungallur. The deity is Rama with four arms, bearing a bow, a conch, a discus and a garland. The image is believed to have been worshipped by Krishna at Dwarka, sunk in the sea after his ascension and found years later by fishermen.

Shiva as Dakshinamoorthy, Ganesha, Shastha and Krishna have shrines here, and Hanuman, Karthikeya, Chathan and the serpent gods are also worshipped. Offerings include Chathan Bhandaram against evil influences, Kadhina Vedi marking Hanuman's return from the search for Sita, and Meenoottu, feeding the fish in the river, thought to help asthma. The deity presides over Arattupuzha Pooram. Thriprayar is one of the Nalambalam, four temples to Rama and his brothers visited on the first day of Karkadakam.
