The story

Thakurbari Temple stands in the heart of Gangtok and ranks among Sikkim's oldest Hindu temples. It was built in 1935 on land donated by the Chogyal, Sikkim's former ruler, and houses almost all the major Hindu deities, making it an important meeting point for the town's Hindu community.

Between 1945 and 1947 the temple was enlarged into a major complex. A further upgrade, begun in 2011, was to add a multipurpose hall and a library, but as of February 2015 the work was still unfinished for lack of funds.
