01 — The story

The story

Lingdum Monastery, also known as Ranka Monastery, is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the hills outside Gangtok. It is reached by a scenic mountain road with views of the valleys and the Himalayan peaks, and an entrance gate hung with prayer flags marks the way in.

The main prayer hall is the centre of the complex, its walls covered in murals of Buddhist deities. Around it are courtyards, meditation halls and the quarters of the resident monks, with prayer wheels set along the walkways. Visitors may sit quietly in the hall during prayers, when the chanting of the monks and the smell of incense fill the space.
