01 — The story

The story

Tsomgo Lake, also called Changu Lake, lies at about 12,313 feet in the mountains east of Gangtok, on the road towards Nathu La. The lake fills a hollow among steep slopes and meadows, with snow peaks rising around it, and its clear water reflects the surrounding ridges.

The lake is held sacred by the Sikkimese, who regard it as the home of guardian spirits. One local story says it was formed from the tears of gods who wept at the suffering of the villagers. Pilgrims still come to pray and make offerings at its shore. It is one of the most visited sights on day trips from Gangtok.
