01 — The story

The story

The Himalayan Zoological Park is a zoo on the forested hills of Gangtok devoted to animals of the Himalayan region. It covers a large area of slope, and its animals are kept in wide enclosures planted to resemble their natural surroundings rather than in small cages.

Walking trails wind through the park between the enclosures. The best-known residents are the red panda, the snow leopard and the Himalayan black bear, alongside other mountain species, several of them endangered. The forest setting makes the walk itself part of the visit, and it is one of the easiest ways to see Himalayan wildlife at close range.
