01 — The story

The story

Do-Drul Chorten is a Tibetan Buddhist stupa in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, and one of the main places of worship in the town. Its large white dome is decorated with carvings and sacred emblems, and it is surrounded by a wall of prayer wheels and a ring of smaller shrines.

Devotees walk around the chorten in a clockwise direction, turning the prayer wheels as they go and praying for peace and well-being. Monks chant in the shrines, incense burns, and strings of prayer flags hang over the compound. Visitors are free to sit quietly in the precinct or join the circuit, and the site offers a calm break from the busy streets of the town centre.
