The story

St. Sebastian's Church at Chittattukara is a Syro-Malabar Catholic church 22 km north-west of Thrissur, 5 km south-east of Guruvayur and 6 km from the historic Palayur Church. For centuries local believers depended on Palayur, crossing fields and ponds to reach it. Tradition says a church of the cross arose at Chittattukara around 1200 AD, and this Muthemapalli is thought to be the church and market at Brahmakulam mentioned in the travels of Marco Polo, Brahmakulam being the old revenue name of the village.

The parish was established in 1770, and at that time its members came from many places, among them Pavaratti and Venmenadu. As numbers grew, a new plot was bought in 1792 and a church built, followed by the large Portuguese-style church completed in 1810, which remains in use. Chittattukara Angadi, a place of trade since ancient times, still has houses with peedikas in front.
