The story

Sri Ananda Lingeshwara Temple sits on Ananda Giri, a hill near Hebbal in Bengaluru, and its origins are traced to the 13th century under the Chola dynasty. The temple was renovated in 2000, its surroundings in 2009, and a Ganesha shrine on the hill's western side in 2012. Other shrines around the hill include those to Muneshwara, Kateramma Devi, Ayyappa and Shani Mahatma.

On the east side is a cave with an idol of Kaala Bairaveshwara, the guardian of the area; by tradition devotees worship him before the main deity. A passage from the cave is believed to have once run to Nandi Hills, giving kings an escape route, though building work has since cut it. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated here like a fair, with over a thousand visitors, programmes running into the next day and a free lunch served the day after.
