Sri Gangamma Devi Temple stands on 2nd Temple Street in Malleshwaram, north-western Bengaluru, near the Kadu Malleshwara temple. Its goddess, Gangamma, identified with the goddess Ganga, is a nada devathe, or local deity, of the city. A permanent temple was consecrated in her honour in 2004, and the complex also has smaller shrines to Ganesha, Subramanya and the Navagrahas.
The Gangamma jathre, a religious fair and festival, has been held in the Malleshwaram area since 1928 and now centres on this temple. Over three days thousands of devotees arrive from across Bengaluru and beyond; the temple and the goddess are specially decorated, and offerings of ragi ganji, a millet gruel, are made along with flowers, coconuts and fruit.
