Bengaluru Palace was commissioned in 1873 for Chamarajendra Wadiyar X, Maharaja of Mysore, on a 454-acre plot that had belonged to John Garrett, linguist and head of the Central High School. It lies about 5 km north of the city centre and cost around ₹1 million to build.
The design draws on Windsor Castle and follows the Tudor Revival style, with fortified towers and turreted parapets, and plants cover parts of its outer walls. Inside are 34 rooms, a swimming pool and detailed woodwork, motifs and art pieces. The palace is open to the public, and its courtyard and grounds host concerts, exhibitions, weddings and cultural programmes; there is also an amusement park within the grounds, and a number of films have been shot here.
