The story

The Museum of Art and Photography, known as MAP, is a private art museum in central Bengaluru. Its collection of more than 60,000 works spans paintings, sculpture, textiles and photographs, with the oldest pieces reaching back to the 10th century. The six-storey building is wrapped in steel panels meant to recall an industrial water tank, a nod to the idea of storing something valuable.

MAP grew out of the collection of Abhishek Poddar, who was mentored early on by the artist Manjit Bawa and went on to build ties with painters such as Tyeb Mehta and Arpita Singh. Inside are interactive digital galleries, a research and conservation lab, a café, a rooftop restaurant and a shop. The museum is designed for visitors of all abilities, with audio and text guides and tactile artworks, and it received a Universal Design Award. It also runs workshops, teacher training and public talks.
