01 — The story

The story

Muthyala Maduvu, also called Pearl Valley, is a picnic spot on the outskirts of Bengaluru, roughly 40 km from the city and 5 km from Anekal. Its name comes from the waterfall at its centre, which drops about 92 m; the white droplets in its spray are likened to pearls. The fall is at its fullest during the monsoon.

Trails run through the surrounding hills and woods, and a popular one climbs to the top of the fall for views across the valley towards the Bengaluru skyline. Birdwatchers can look for Indian rollers, kingfishers and several kinds of parakeet. The Karnataka Forest Department has added seating and viewpoints, and there are public toilets, but food options nearby are few, so most visitors bring their own meals and are expected to take their litter home.
