01 — The story

The story

Puttanna Chetty Town Hall, also called Purabhavana, is a neoclassical municipal building in central Bengaluru. It was completed in 1935 and named after Sir K. P. Puttanna Chetty, a philanthropist and president of the city municipality who played a large part in the city's early twentieth-century growth.

The white building is symmetrical, approached by a broad flight of steps, with porticoes of eight tall Corinthian columns on its sides, arched windows, carved cornices and floral ornament. Inside, an auditorium seating over 1,000 people has wooden floors and moulded ceilings. Built as a venue for public assemblies and council meetings, it has hosted classical concerts, plays and civic gatherings ever since.
