01 — The story

The story

St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral is the mother church of the Catholic Archdiocese of Bangalore. Missionaries from France, members of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, built the first church of St. Francis Xavier on the site in 1851. As the Catholic population grew, a foundation stone for a larger church was laid in 1911, and the new building opened on 26 May 1932. When the Diocese of Mysore was divided in February 1940, it became the cathedral of the new Diocese of Bangalore.

The two domes on the facade were part of the original plan but had to wait for funds, and were opened only in 2009 for the platinum jubilee, when Archbishop Bernard Moras rededicated the cathedral. The large compound also holds a shrine to St. Anthony and three schools, named after St. Aloysius, St. Anthony and St. Rock.
