Freedom Park is in Bengaluru's central business district, on the site of the former Central Jail, and it was opened to visitors in November 2008. A section of the park has been set apart for protests.
The old prison has its place in the country's political history. After the Emergency was proclaimed in 1975, L.K. Advani, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and other opposition leaders were arrested and locked up here. In more recent years the park hosted the indefinite fast backed by India Against Corruption, part of Anna Hazare's campaign for the government to pass the Lokpal bill.
