01 — The story

The story

Smriti Van, also called the Forest of Memories, is a memorial to the 2001 earthquake on Bhujiyo Dungar hill at the edge of Bhuj. It covers about 470 acres, the largest memorial of its type in modern India, and shares the hill with Bhujia Fort, which is more than 300 years old. Its 50 check-dam reservoirs carry the names of close to 13,000 people who died in the earthquake, and they also recharge groundwater and support plant life on the slopes.

The museum is organised around renewal and sustainability. Its seven interactive blocks run from Rebirth, Rediscover, Restore, Rebuild, Rethink and Relive to a final block, Renew.
