01 — The story

The story

Ambe Dham Temple stands at Godhara in the Kutch desert and is devoted to Goddess Amba, a form of Durga. The Shri Jay Ambe Sarvajanik Trust manages it. Its design mixes traditional and modern elements, with carved and painted decoration, and stalls around the complex sell local handicrafts, souvenirs and food.

A popular legend links the temple's founding to Swaminarayan: meditating beneath a large banyan tree in Kutch, he is said to have seen Amba, who asked him to build her a shrine. Navratri brings lights, flowers, aarti and bhajans, and the Bhadra Purnima fair adds folk performances and crafts. Shivratri, Diwali and Janmashtami are also celebrated.
