01 — The story

The story

Hamirsar Lake in the centre of Bhuj is about 450 years old and takes its name from Rao Hamir, a Jadeja ruler. It was made to supply water to the town in the dry Kutch landscape, using a network of channels and tunnels that drew water from three rivers.

The 2001 earthquake damaged this supply system, but the people of Bhuj revived the lake in 2003 and its water became clean enough to drink again. Today it is a picnic spot with a boardwalk used for morning and evening walks, and migratory birds gather on it in winter. Aina Mahal, Prag Mahal, the Kutch Museum and Ramkund Stepwell lie around it, with a Swaminarayan Temple to the east and Sharad Baug Palace to the west.
