The story

The Kateshwar Buddhist Caves, also known as the Siyot Caves, lie in the rough country near Bhuj. They are thought to date from around the 1st century AD, and excavations in 1988-89 indicated that they sheltered Buddhist monks. Chinese travellers of the 7th century wrote about the site.

The caves are cut into rock and contain meditation spaces, small shrines and simple carvings. Clay seals found here show the Buddha in different mudras, while others bear inscriptions in Brahmi and Devanagari. The interiors stay naturally cool through the day.
