The story

Sinha Library in Patna was founded in 1924 by Dr Sachchidananda Sinha, scholar and writer, who was the first to preside over the Constituent Assembly that framed India's Constitution. Originally named the Shrimati Radhika Sinha Institute together with the Sachchidananda Sinha Library, it passed to the state government in 1955 to become the state central library. Its reading room was once Sinha's dining hall, converted in memory of his wife, Radhika Devi; there he entertained friends such as Mahatma Gandhi and Maulana Mazharul Haque, and many Congress Working Committee meetings took place with Gandhi present. Relief meetings after the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake were chaired here by Rajendra Prasad, and Jawaharlal Nehru stayed here on his first visit to Patna as Prime Minister.

The library holds more than 180,000 books, including about 50,000 rare volumes from Sinha's own collection signed by him. Old journals such as Gandhi's Harijan, Congress proceedings since 1885 and parliamentary debates are also kept.
