The story

The Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya in Patna is a museum devoted to Mahatma Gandhi. After his assassination in January 1948, a Gandhi Memorial Trust was formed under Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and in 1958 it chose Patna for a Gandhi museum in Bihar. Work began modestly, with pictures of Gandhi's life shown in small rooms of an old building, and the first gallery opened on 16 December 1967.

Governor R.D. Bhandare unveiled a statue of Gandhi on 10 June 1975, and construction of the larger complex followed. The displays run in chronological order through photographs, artworks, manuscripts and quotations, along with models of rooms from Gandhi's life. Lectures and cultural events take place in two later additions, halls named after Kasturba Gandhi and Badshah Khan.
