The story

Buddha Smriti Park, or Buddha Memorial Park, is a 22-acre park on Frazer Road near Patna Junction, built by the Bihar government for the Buddha's 2,554th birth anniversary on the site of the British-era Bankipur Central Jail. Designed by Vikram Lall, it was opened by the Dalai Lama on 27 May 2010, who planted two Bodhi saplings, one from Bodh Gaya and one from Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka.

At its centre stands the Patliputra Karuna Stupa, 200 feet high, which holds a pot of the Buddha's ashes excavated at Vaishali and formerly displayed in the Patna Museum. The park also has a tall statue of the Buddha, a museum with Buddhist relics given by Thailand, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Myanmar and Japan, and a meditation centre modelled on the monasteries of ancient Nalanda, with 60 cells looking towards the stupa. An evening laser show tells the history of Bihar.
