The story

The Shankaracharya Math in Badrinath is a monastery founded in the 8th century by the philosopher Adi Shankaracharya. Also called Jyotirmath, it is the northern one of four principal institutions he set up to revive and keep alive Sanatana Dharma and the teaching of Advaita Vedanta.

The monastery remains a centre of monastic life that draws both devotees and scholars. Its halls carry carvings, symbols and sacred texts, and the complex includes shrines and quiet meditation halls used for worship and study.
