Vishnuprayag is the first of the Panch Prayags, the five sacred river confluences of the Garhwal Himalayas. Here the Alaknanda, also called the Vishnu Ganga, is joined by the Dhauliganga coming down from the Niti Valley, and a suspension bridge spans the Alaknanda.
The place is named after Lord Vishnu, who is believed to have meditated at the confluence, and Hindu pilgrims have long visited it. Old temples and shrines stand nearby. The rivers cut deep gorges through the rock, and the site lies on a geological fault line that draws scientific study.
