Kalpeshwar is one of the five Panch Kedar temples of Lord Shiva in the Garhwal Himalayas, sitting at about 2,200 metres. Of the five, it alone can be reached in every season. The shrine honours Shiva's jata, or matted hair, and inside its plain stone building a natural rock thought to resemble those locks is worshipped. Tradition holds that the sage Durvasa meditated here.
The approach is a 10 km walk from Helang through forest, terraced farmland and the village of Urgam, with views over the Himalayas and the Alaknanda River along the way.
