Vyas Gufa and Ganesh Gufa are two neighbouring caves in the Himalayas tied to the origin of the Mahabharata. A path through forest and rocky ground leads to Vyas Gufa, a large cave whose mouth bears carvings and old symbols. Inside, statues and shrines honour the sage Vyas, who is believed to have composed the epic here, and side chambers run deeper into the rock.
Ganesh Gufa, the smaller of the pair, lies close by and is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Tradition says Ganesha wrote down the Mahabharata at this spot while Vyasa recited it. Its walls are painted and carved with scenes from Hindu mythology and from Ganesha's life, and pilgrims come to worship him.
